Two team members from Lifeguard-Nashville spent the day with about 20-30 preschool and early elementary school children. John and Ray explained 911 to the children, including how, when, and why to call 911. The crew also taught the children about safety and precautions; one area of safety discussed was the use of gloves when interacting with patients. They also explained to the children that they should never touch anyone else's blood without wearing gloves. All of the children that wanted to were allowed to try on some gloves, like little paramedics and EMTS.
After the safety and 911 eduation, the kids were taken outside to the ambulance for a demonstration. Lifeguard is committed to decreasing anxiety levels during emergencies, especially for children. Exploring the ambulance and explaining the equipment in terminology they understand helps diminish a child's fear of the ambulance, whether they are the patient or a loved one is the patient.
